51 B transmission

It appears I have got a bad bearing on the input shaft of the transmission of my 1951 B. I have never been into the transmission. Any suggestions about other things to do while I"m in that deep? Anything in particular to watch out for?

I have the service manual for the tractor, which seems fairly clear about how to dissasemble and reassemble.

The service manual mentions that a lot of the cap screws are held by mechanics wire. What is this, and how do I get some?

Thanks,

Kurt.

Anytime I had to go into one I did the whole thing right down to the lower countershaft as these seem to either have bad bearings or loosen up alot over the years. I also put all of the ball bearings on the top in new. Don't know about now, but the springs for the shifter pawls were surprizingly low priced and if they still are I'd put in all new ones. If the shifter forks have deep worn spots from the ball of the shift lever I will build these back up with nickle welding rod then grind them back out flat.Check them for loose rivets holding the fork on.You can tighten these up with a hammer and back up the rivet on an anvil or heavy iron. This will tighten up the pattern and help prevent getting into 2 gears at once or not getting in all the way. Work on the shift lever too alot of times they need the upper snap ring groove recut to clean it up and then to tighten it up against the spring an extra washer helps. May as well check the pto bevel gear bushings clear down in the bottom to make sure they aren't chewed up too.

Read and follow the manual ( hopefully you have a JD one ) it will walk you through tear down and set up and adjustments.

Kurt,

I completely rebuilt my B transmission recently. The manual is very helpful and will walk you through it. I got most of my bearings from JD because the price was competitive. Once you pull some bearings out your will probably find Timken or New Departure numbers. You can use those numbers to get competitive prices.

The worst part I found was removing the bad races and bearings out of the housing and off the shafts.

If you have a bad bearing race the easiest way to get it out is to use an arc welder and weld a bead around the face. It will drop right out. A slide hammer works well too. Heat is your friend.

I have found, for every situation there is a tip or trick to help out.

Jason,

Did you by any chance keep a record of the bearing numbers?

Thanks,

Kurt

Actually I kept most of the old bearings in the new boxes. They showed wear and some pitting so I oped to replace. In a pinch these could still be used.

My B is a 1940 which is a 4 speed. Would have to do a close cross examination of the parts book. From what I remember, the parts in the main case are mostly the same. Your 51 has two more gears on the left side external to the case under a cover.

I will take a look and see what bearings are common and send you a list.

Thank you.

What did you use for the mechanics wire the service manual mentions passing through the drilled heads of the various cap screws?

Check with NAPA or I think I got some mechanics wire at TSC. I was able to get just a small roll. A hardware may have it too.

I used tie wire; the same stuff used to tie rebar together. I suppose baling wire would work too. I might be wrong, but that's what I used.

The purpose is to prevent the bolts from loosening; this is used extensively in aircraft. When wrapping the wire, think about wrapping it to keep the bolt tight, tying in that direction. Look at how the factory did it, and follow their example.

Most all brg. companies can cross the JD part numbers. JD dropped the R off the end of most of them now too.

Prices always seemed to vary. I would shop around ,try JD first and then compare to some bearing supply places.
