I HAVE DONE SEVRAL OF THESE CONVERSON AND THAY ARE NOT TO BAD TO DO.
REMOVE THE OLD GEN AND BRACKET THUN THE BRACKET OVER GET THE 12V DELCO ALT AND LINE UP THE MOUNTING HOLE NOW YOU CAN SEE THAT SOME METAL NEEDS TO BE CUT OFF TO CLEAL TO FANS ON THE ALT.
I LIKE TO CUT A PIPE TO FILL THE GAP BETWEN THE ALT AND LAST EAR ON BRACKET AND USE A LONE 3/8 BOLT. YOU NEED TO GET A 12V STARTER OF AN 4230 OR 1969 AND UP 12V DESEL 4020.IF YOU USE THE NAPNEDISO STARTER YOU WILL ALLSO NEED A STARTER RELAY (THE 4230 PARTS BOOK WILL HAVE A BRAKET TO MOUNT IS OVER THE STARTER AND ON EXMANIFOLD BOLT.)
HOPE THIS HELPS IF YOU NEED MORE INFO JUST E-MAIL ME

If I were going to tackle this and if I had the required space I would install two 12 volt batteries. This way (with a little creative wiring) I would end up with 24 volt starting capability for the diesel but everything else including the alternator would be 12 volt. I think that there is a way to do this. Would this address your problem? Tugboat

thanks for the info. now let me ask another question.. could the 24 volt starter be left on for starting. and just wire around to make everything else 12 volt?? I know this is a dumb question, but yesterday got to thinking, in the years past have charged tractor with a 12 volt trickle charger on the left battery.when batteries were dead. I have been to johndeere dealer in this area and have had not ever got any response to getting a converting kit. so this is why i want to do it myself.. thanks for all information and support...cew

Robert's right- the 24v alt. works good. 5010 or 760 scraper used them.

I HAVE SET ONE UP THAT STARED ON 24V AND CHAGED ON 12V THE BAD PART IS YOU HAVE TO CHAGE THE BATTERY ONE AT A TIME WHIT A SWTCH AND AMP GAGE
THE BEST WAY AND WILL STAY STOCK IS TO GET A 24V ISOLATED ALT.JD WILL HAVE IT.ITS FOR OLDER 4020 WITH FRATRY AIR CON.

I saw a 4020 converted to series-parallel starting once & it was the worst mess I ever saw. Don't even think about doing it. It looked like a rat's nest. Leave the original system on-keep it up in shape & it will work for the next 30 yrs. like it did for the last 30. Someday people will be restoring 4020's & everybody will be asking how to get rid of these damn 12V conversions.

Check with your local Deere dealer. They have a kit available that includes everything you need including instructions. I don't think a 4020LP starter will start the diesel. Hope this helps.
