I posted a message on 2-27-2006 about the missing tag on my 420's . I have no doubts about one of them but was wondering about the other, it is a straight steer , but the rear end final drives look like a 40. Is this a 420 or a 40 ? did Deere make a change in the final drive during the production of 420's ? Haven't had time to look into the replacement tags , but was wondering what the cost will be?

The 56 420 is very close to the 55 model 40. That mentioned change at 100,000 is the 57 model year and they did redesign the finals for 57. The 56 finals are from the model 40. If it has a water pump, it's a 420.

Four speed, five speed, live pto? How many bolts hold the starter on? Does she have a water pump?

It had a water pump, it went bad, and was removed before I bought it, I am pretty sure it has a 5 speed and 2 bolts hold on the starter. So do you think this is a 420?

Serial number 100,000 was the big change for the 420 series. The easy thing to spot is the 2 bolt starter vs. the set screw mount. Others you will need a parts book. Many of the parts will mix and match between 40, early 420, and late 420 which if someone (like me) has been at it can confuse the issue. You said the water pump was removed? Didn't they replace it? A 420 engine block is different form a 40 in many ways. They will interchange as whole units, but parts and pieces don't usually except for a few things on the outside like the carb (it will fit, but they are are different), the distributor and generator.
