Oil pressure will seem to be okay for a few seconds then pegs the needle.

Alternator gauge seems to be all over the place, both over charging and under charging. New alternator on tractor, tested out of the box before installed.

Temp gauge does not move. Connection on sending unit looks good.

Fuel gauge working properly.

All conections look good. Buss bars where the circut breakers are on the left side of the steering console are corrossion free and all connections look good. Battery connections good.

Where should I look?

As Henry said, check the main connector where it enters the gauge cluster. I've seen those work loose and cause multiple problems at once. Failing that, you'll have to sort out each gauge individually, starting with making sure the alternator is charging consistently, which was also already stated. Use an analog or better yet a digital volt meter and check charging voltage at the alternator "+" post with the engine running. You should have 14 volts, plus or minus a few tenths.

John

I just went thru some weird ones with guages and alt probs with the nighbor's 4240 last fall.

It would now charge, especially when the blinkers were turned on for the grain wagon. Also it would not start intermitently - good bats but would not do anything when you turned the key on. The Guage would be in the red. He put new alternator on but that was not the prob. I messed around and figured out that something was goofey in the ign switch. I moved the plug ins around to insure connections and all was well with the starting and charging. Afterward, I thought that maybe it had two probs there. When the switch was turned on perhaps it wasn't sending the 12 volts to the alt. Also it wasn't sending juice to a relay on the left side. Oh well, after all the hight dollar guys went home, it got fixed for nothing.

This tractor has always had a fuel guage that was nutso. That turned out to be a connection in the big plug on the left side where the harness hooks to the instrument cluster. Since this was one guage, I thought it would be a quick fix to jump the wire around the plug, but he got hinky on that one and all are happy with a fuel guage that don't work. But I did run out of fuel with it one time last fall, guess i should have stuck more dirty sticks down in the tank lol.

I agree with the other posts on grounding, but thought that the 42 might be close to the 44 and I wuld throw in some thngs that went haywire on that one.

good luck

Bob, when you say gauge pannel, are you talking the pea green panel that all the gauges plug into, left side of the steering column?
Thanks in advance
Ron

"Oil pressure will seem to be okay for a few seconds then pegs the needle."

Oil pressure senders often go bad and cause this, or you may have ground problems in the gauge panel. Identifying the ground on the oil gauge (and the voltmeter) and connecting them to a good ground will fix that problem.

"Alternator gauge seems to be all over the place, both over charging and under charging. New alternator on tractor, tested out of the box before installed."

Check the 2-wire harness and connector at the alternator for broken wires and dirty terminals.

Also, as previously mentioned, a bad instrument panel ground can cause the gauges to go mickey. Identifying the ground on the voltmeter (and the oil gauge), and connecting them to a good ground will fix that problem.

"Temp gauge does not move. Connection on sending unit looks good."

Remove the wire from the temp sender, and connect it to a good ground with a jumper wire. The gauge should peg "HOT". If the gauge still does not move, check for power and ground at the temp gauge.
