1936 d low oil pressure

Oil preesure needle consistently is between low and center line. Oil and filter change did not make a difference. No indication of burning oil or blowby. Runs smooth. Could it be gauge or typical for this model year? Should I attempt to adjust pressure or leave alone since I do not use tractor for work?

kenc, Try another known good guage first to be sure it's a problem. You should have 10-15 psi oil pressure or guage between M and H on JD guage. I hope you removed the oil strainer held on by 2 nuts on the lower crankcase flywheel side. Sometimes you will be amazed at the crud gunk and sludge inside there on a old D. If that isn't clean it will starve the oil pump. One commmon problem on many of these older 2 cylinders with low oil pressure could be a distorted oil filter can leaking internally because the filter nut was overtightened distorting the can allowing leakage around it. You can remove the flat crankcase cover to get inside and check the oil lines for leakage or breakage also. There is a by pass valve plug on top of the oil filter head block allowing oil pressure adjustment. Loosen the lock screw and remove the tin shield and then you can turn the adjusting screw in to increase or out to lower to get the 10-15 psi. If lines look good and adjustment doesn't help suspect the oil filter can or oil pump area next. Hopefully no leaks and gaskets are good on the oil pump. The gasket by gears on oil pump is critical to thickness. To fix the oil can you have to take the lines loose and remove the filter block so the the can be drove out with a wood block and straightened and then sealer applied to it and pulled back in with steel backing plates and a large bolt. Hopefully one of these will be the problem and not loose or bad crank bearings.

where is best place to get a known good gauge, dealer etc? Exactly where is oil strainer located? Do you have diagram? Old oil filter and new oil filter made no difference. I suspect oil strainer because when I changed oil, gobs of congealed oil plopped out of drain hole. I'll try strainer first.

kenc, Posted pic of oil strainer and pump on parts & pieces. It's on lower crankcase, flywheel side. Just remove the 2 nuts and it slides out. The screen is soldered on the strainer assembly. Make sure it is not loose and cleaned out. You'll need the gasket 10, D308R also. On other early Ds without oil filter this was it for a filter so D operators always removed this for clean out when changing oil. Get ready with a scraper or flat iron to reach in and scrape out inches of dirt and goo on these Ds. It happens and I've scraped out all kinds of gunk and metal out of these before so be careful reaching in there and don't get metal in your hand. You may need a few oil changes and flushings to get it cleaned out. A good oil guage at most auto supplies will read in psi but I bet your JD guage will work after cleaning this out.
