40 B man, I had the same problem on my 51B. It turned out to be a collapsed spring in the shifting fork for the detent plunger. It was kinda of a pain , but I replaced it without removing the shaft compleatly. Good luck. Dave

I didn't think a 51B had a hi/lo lever.

Does the gear shift move, or does the tractor just stop moving? If the gear shift stays where it is, then the "high/low" gear is slipping out of the input gear on the pulley side. Mine does the same thing. I haven't fixed it yet.

You could have a problem with the hi/lo shifter which is located on the front shift rail in the transmission. You will have to remove the top cover to inspect it. If the shifter is actually moving the gear, then you may have a bad bearing on the end of the splined gear shaft,(center) or a bad gear.(sliding gear shaft pinion) A good looking will tell you where the problem is. It will be a pretty big job to fix if it is the bearing or gear.
