I have a 4020, and was thinking about getting another one for general utility purposes, but then started looking at a nice 4240. Any observations on horsepower, general reliability and how well this model has fared? A good 4020 seems to go around 9-$10,000, but I've seen them up to $12k, and the 4240's are around 14-16 thousand. Is the extra cost worth it?

You didn't mention what the 42 had for transmission or operator station, certainly if you are going to be doing serious work , the cab and the powershift or quad-range are well worth the extra $$ ----that is if you are comparing it to a 4020 with sycro-range

I use my neighbors two 4240s. Good machines. Ernie's is the quad 4 selector with 4 forward and 2 reverse with on the fly between 1st. and 2nd. Dyno at 130 hp. It has 6,500 hours on it and is still going strong. Clutch was changed at 5,000 hours. Has the Soundgard cab.

Jeff's is the ROPS (and a LOUD straight pipe) with on the fly 8 forward and two reverse. He has an aftermarket turbo and that sucker will flat spin tires. Now what good that does I don't know. He bought it a year ago with 3,500 hours, new paint and new tires for $13,500. So that price sounds about right.

careful when looking at buying those tractors.....apparently in america you can specify the type of rear axles used.....the 4440 had heavy duty type whereas the 4240 had lighter axles.....apparently.....we had one on a farm i worked on....turboed.....10,000hours when sold.....completely worn out.....had axle problems.....bearings.....and snaped one axle?!
yet another farm i worked on the 4240 has gone like a dream (5700hours)..... i am only speaking from experince....a dummy with a tale to tell....
