Just bought a 52 B ,the owner said he hit a stump with the bushhog and stripped a gear in the trans. said (1,2,3,R ) were ok but (4,5,6) were gone. I get her running , and tried out the shifter , if you slide the shifter from the right quadrant to the left slowly and carefully you can find 4,5,6 . How bad a problem do I have , and can I use it like it is , befor I tear into it. how deep will I have to go into the trans ?

You are in for some major repairs to get at it.If they just broke the countershaft idler a double cluster gear than you may still be able to find a NEW aftermarket one. If it really busted up stuff, like the cast boss in the main case that holds the bevel gear and bushing then you are doomed. Alot of times you can just lift the top shifter assy. off and get a good look in there with a good light after you drain the fluid out.

I think you mean 1,2,4 and R. and 3,5,6...

Sounds like The "hi-low" gear has broken teeth on it. I'm not smart enough to post a picture, but send me an e-mail and I'll send you a picture. I'm not smart enuff to fix mine. On a moderate pull at 3500# or 4000#, the High side kicks out when I'm in 3rd or 5th gear on my '47 B.
