HELLO JD FREINDS,
HERE'S THE PROBLEM, I GOT MY EXHAUST VALVE UNSTUCK, I CLEANED THE CARB, I REBUILT THE CARB,
THEN I FOUND WWW.ROBERTSCARBREPAIR.COM AND SAW THAT I WAS MISSING THE NOZZLE. I DRILLED OUT ALL THE AIR HOLES,PUT IN A NEW NOZZLE,AND CLEANED EVERYTHING.
I BUILT NEW SPARK PLUG WIRES, NEW PLUGS, NEW COIL WIRE.
SHE IDLES AND RUNS MUCH BETTER, BUT WHEN SHE IS SITTING THERE RUNNING THE GOV. MOVES AND SOUNDS LIKE IT BOGGING DOWN THEN PICKS UP AND RUNS GOOD FOR ABOUT 20 SECS AND DOES IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.
ANY ADVICE????? ?????
THANKS FOR ANY HELP!
YOU ALL HAVE HELPED ME GET MY FIRST JD RUNNING!!! NOW I'M HOOKED ON THE GREEN AND YELLOW.
PATRICK.

Patrick, there are three small passages in the idle circuit of a carburetor for your A in the carburetor housing that will be on both sides of the throttle disk when it is closed. Many people don't even know these are there. You can clean out all the places where a plug was and still not have your idle circuit clean without cleaning these. Usually they get covered with grease and dirt and the throttle disk will seal them over so you can't even tell they are there. No carburetor cleaning is comlete without cleaning these. Hope this helps. Mike

Patrick, these little things are a little hard to diagnose without actually being there and listening to it, but here are some possibilities. First, I assume you have adjustened and richened the idle jet to see if it stops that bogging down at idle because at idle its the idle jet and its circuit the tractor is running on. Also if theres a vacuum leak or excess play or wear like at the throttle butterfly shaft bushings, it leans out at idle then the governor opens up where its running on the power circuit. Misadjusted or bad governor/throttle linkages causes governor hunt and worn governor weight pins does also. It still sounds like classic idle carb passage clogs to me. In that situation, the idle circuits are plugged so rpm slows at idle and the governor opens up the throttle giving it plenty gas to run on a while then she slows down and the process continues over and over. When you rebuilt the carb, did you remove each and every brass screw drill plug and clean behind them with mig welding wire and torch cleaner tips and air etc etc ??? This all assumes you have the timing and ignition and plugs already perfect?? Let us know and good luck. John Nordhoff aka Ol John T

HELLO MR. JOHN T

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
I HAVE BEEN DOING SOME STUDYING ON CARB REBUILDS
AND I LEFT OUT A ROUND FELT WASHER IN MY CARB KIT
BECAUSE I HAD NO IDEA WHERE IT WENT. I THINK I
GOES BETWEEN THE THROTTLE SHAFT AND THE TOP OF THE
CARB.
I HAVE CHANGED BUSHINGS.
I CLEANED BEHIND ALL PLUGS BUT ONE.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE CARB FROM THE LEFT SIDE
OF THE TRACTOR IT IS THE TOP PLUG AT THE BACK SIDE
OF THE CARB. FOR WHAT EVER REASON IT HAS BEEN FILLED. I NEED TO DRILL AND TAP THIS HOLE SO I CAN
PUT A PLUG BACK IN IT.
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP, I'LL LET YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.
THANKS, PATRICK 51A

Hi - just a thought - I had a similar problem with the MC, and the needle wasn't sealing - some small brass bits kept floating through. Can you look in the carb throat, or use a mirror to see if you are getting gas drips when the speed changes ? It's possible that a drip or 2 will slow the idle, then it picks up on the gov. Have a look.
