Both of my 420's are missing thier serial # tags . I read an article in Antique Power last month about the 420 having the serial # stamped on the block, but didn't say where to look. Also said you could get a replacement tag from J.D. ,is this true?

Bill, you can get the replacement tag from Deere by going through a dealer rep. But you won"t be pleased with it. I have had them, and they are nothing like the original tags. It will be a modern looking tag with bar codes on it. Of course it will beat nothing at all.

Don't know if it going to work or not, but I'm corresponding with a Marion Russow at John Deere trying to get the serial number for my 420 C. The numbers that you mentioned are not serial numbers or casting numbers, but some stamped in the block and transmission. The one on the block is a vertical number just below the generator and the one on the transmission is stamped on the top cover on the left side on my 420 C. The address of the person at JD that I'm working with is:
Marion Russow
Deere & Co.
One John Deere Place WOB 3SW
Moline, IL. 61265

You might want to try that.
