Hi,just bought a J.D."BR", sn#250181,a 1935 model. It has a little stick-like oil indicator on the govenor housing instead of an oil gauge.. when did deere come to their senses and stop doing this? there is a tapped whole on the side, should I add a gauge there? I also bought a J.D."L" no serial no. though...somebody yanked the plate off the rear axle the night before the auction, and nobody had bothered to write it down before that, it does have the hercules engine, but also it has no gauge!(DONT tell me this was EXTRA EQUIPMENT!) shouldn't this have a gauge also?

Sorry but the pop-up indicator was a very reliable gauge , and the D's also used it for many years . Even the D's with the add on oil filter had the redtop indicator. You could tell if you had any oil pressure, as for a gauge it can stick and show pressure all the time or no oil pressure and give you a false reading. The gauge uses a borlon tube to register the pressure. Bend it a little and the gauge is no longer good. I would rather have the redtop oil indicator than a gauge.

Dale, you don't have a BR. you have an early AR. they used the redhead indicator for oil pressure until the end of the year 1935 (some 1936 models). No you shouldn't put a gage in the tapped hole. The popup indicator has worked for over 60 years so why worry about it now. It will continue to work just fine. The L should have a gage.
