I'm a wanabe farmer. My only tractor capable of running grinder/moving roundbails is hard to start when cold. It has a block heater that seems to operate like a check valve...probably not making sense...It warms up, but doesn't seem to move fluid. I removed it and cleaned rusty gunk, and reinstalled the way it was original. When I blew air through unit the same way fluid would go, it seemed to have a check valve on it...maybe its heat controlled? I've been told not to use starting fluid...one guy said OK to use WD40? I seem to learn everything the hard way, so I was hoping somebody would have some good advice. Thanks, freezing in MI

Batteries should ALWAYS be replaced in pairs. The old battery will pull down the new battery. This has been proven time and time again through real world experience.

IF worse comes to worse, I have on occasion drained the oil and stored it inside where it was kept warm.Poured it back in the engine when I needed to start the tractor, or just put in new very warm oil.Tractor started like it was summer. It was a 730 Diesel.

Most tank heaters have a plastic check ball in the bottom that acts as a check-valve. I've had several that melted the ball a bit and it would get stuck. Then the coolant wouldn't move, i.e. no d*mn good. Usually when this happens, the heater overheats and trips its own breaker. As long as you're sure it was hooked correctly to start with, you might as well spend $25 and get a new one - or plumb in your own check valve and drill out the plastic ball. Any plumbing shop will have brass inline check valves if you need one. I use one on my thermo-siphon hot water tank hooked to my wood-furnace. One more thing - just about any John Deere tractor will start MUCH better in cold weather if you install a five-dollar hydraulic pump shut-off valve. I know of many that cannot be started without it.

First of all my keyboard just died so this may be a tad incoherent. So read between the lines.

Let's talk basics.

Why doesn't your tractor want to start when it's freezing?

Only 2 reasons.

1. Lubricants: oil thick, diesel cold and well below the violatilithy point; and starting system; battery weak cause of cold temp, thick fluids in the operating systems, such that the starter can't turn the engine over fast enough to heat the combustion chamber adequately to heat the diesel fuel to combustable temp so that she will lite off.

2. Fuel/Air mixture too cold to combust.

Solution: Warm it up, or use something that is not as succeptable to cold temps to get going. Or do the time tested addative, ether.

I find that my tractors start better if the throttle is set to idle. Once she kicks off then you can advance it to whereever you want. Clutch has to be in to remove the transmission load from the engine. On JD you might want to rock the steering back and forth take the hydraulic load off the starting system.

HTH.

Mark

Replace the battery cables with a slightly larger cables that will fit under the floor board, and good tight copper treminals on each end of the cables. This will make a world of difference in the starting. Your old cables probbly have corrosion inside the rubber jackets causing full battery voltage to get to the starter. No Starting Fluid is right. WD-40 will start the tractor. TSC or some other farm supply store will have a block heater for this tractor.

You obviously have a tank heater.

Deere or other?

Any markings indicating "UP"?

Does the heater itself get HOT?
