Charging problem on a late B

The system charges only a little at wide open. With the three lights on, it shows 10 amp discharge at idle and a little discharge at wide open. The generator has been checked by three different shop over the last few years and it always comes back OK. The 6v battery barely has enough power to turn the engine. Apparently not enough current is being generated to keep up with the demand of the lights. Would a smaller generator pulley help?

My '51 B with original never been touched generator (and factory original belt too) did not charge well at slower engine speed. To test the generator I grounded the "field" terminal of generator. Doing that made it charge the battery with the lights on and engine at slow idle. This proved the generator was capable of charging at slow engine speed. Regulator had been replaced with an Echlin (NAPA) unit by previous owners so they must have had some trouble with it too. I turned up the voltage regualtor but it did not help. Since I use the tractor only occasionally and for short times I switched over to an 6volt alternator so as to get good voltage regulation and good output to charge the battery during my short run use. I used a 6 volt alternator because the tractor came with a new 6v battery and this way I did not have to change to 12v battery or lights. Someday I will check out the generator/regulator and see if I can make it work decent at low speeds/short runs.

Does your regulator have an "L" terminal on it? If it does and you don't have it wired from the "L" terminal to the ignition switch, the regulator won't tell the generator to produce enough amperage to keep up with demand. Regulators are available with three or four terminals and either type can be used but they have to be wired correctly. E-mail me and I can send you a wiring diagram for either type.
Hope this helps.

Dennis, you increase a generators output by increasing the field current or turning them faster, so a slighly smaller pulley may help. If the generator is actually as good as you say it is, I would check the third brush location if its a three brusher or change or adjust the regulator which is what regulates the field current. If your battery is old and wimpy you may wanna replace it and be sure you have heavy cables and clean tight connections at battery and starter and ground. Ol John T

I agree with Chuck they just barely keep up anyway. But you might try moving the 3rd brush, you would move it up but not so far that it would touch the other brush.

those generators will barely keep the battery up anyway. I've had some that would charge more than others, you can move the brush in the generator for a higher charge, it is adjustable. you might try another regulator. I've changed mine over to 12 volts. had the generator rebuilt over and changed regulator and bulbs, works better. didn't change the starter, just don't over grind....

by grounding the Generator Field post to the generator, you can bypass the regulator and produce 20-30 amps. the only problems you might have is boiling the water out of the battery if you don't keep an eye on the water level. by moving the third brush in, you can then drop the amp output. I've run a 50 and 51 B this way without problems.
