Getting ready to purchase a major engine overhaul kit for my 1961 4010D. Decision time...should I pay more to get JD parts or go thru a vendor like Foley Engines. Probably will be about 300 - 400 more in price going thru JD. Foley said that JD has suppliers just as they do - - in other words, JD really doesn"t make their own pistons, liners, etc. Hate to spend good money for same stuff but I"m only going to do this once and want to make the best choice.

Unless you have the proper ring plyers and the John Deere piston installer you risk breaking the rings and /or bending them. Deere sleeves come pre assembled and take the risk out of this. One other thing is pistons are matched to sleeves for size such as an oversized piston in an oversized sleeve, close tollerances to be sure but matched none the less. Also the Deere kit has rod and main bearings ,seals, gaskets, etc that may be extra. I have been a Deere mechanic for some 40 years and maybe I'm spoiled but I wouldnt consider anything else. Yes, Deere buys pistons and sleeves etc. from different venders but they must meet Deere specks. Just my 2-cents.Also Deere used to have a 90 day warrenty on their parts. Dont know if thats true anymore as they want their shops to do the work.

I have rebuilt a 466 and a 404 engine in the last two years. The first one the 466 I used a off brand kit and it had Federal Mogual mains had to take them out as they were too tight and get a set from JD dealer. They too were Federal Mogual and were also marked .010 over but they fit. I bought a JD kit for the 404 and it worked better. Things like the rings already installed and the pistions in the jugs and it appeared to have all of the right gaskets. I hate spending the extra money but maybe quality control is worth a little more. Just my experience.

i would go through Napa or some other source. John Deere parts are just the same exept for the fact that they have been taken out of a Federal Mogul box and put in a differnt one.
