My timing marks are right on yet tractor backfires somewhat at idle and gets extremely more violent; backfiring through carb if you try to come up off idle. The left cylinder loads up with fuel. The intake valve pushhrod was slightly bent when I started this project. I straightened it and freed up valve and replaced four valve springs.I am suspicious someone else has had flywheel off and got there marks off when reinstalling it.Where noow???? Thanks Mike PS rotating the top of the mag towards the front of tractor improves matters and the mag was just rebuilt.

Pulled valve cover and the bolt that the pushrod hits on rocker arm is broken.Coincidentaly it is on the same the same valve that was stuck before.Pushhrod did not bend this time.Looks like another trip to Falls JD. I wonder if this piece is availible(F2559 R)? Ohh well find out tomorrow I guess.Incidentaly the timing was off and probably the backfire did the damage,I hope. Mike

sounds very possible camshaft is bent if pushrods were bent.I had a similar problem once 49JD

Mike I agree with Dan there. The cam/crank timing times the valves and pistons and stuff while the governor/cam timing times the mag. Take the plugs out and turn the flywheel to see if the mag impulse is tripping over and firing when the flywheel timing mark is left hand impulse like Dan said. I sort of doubt the flywheel is off spline or you would be complaining about a bad vibration. If the mag isnt firing when you try the above, the mag/cam timing gears may be a tooth off or the mags rear adjustment Dan was talking about may be off. Get it timed then we will worry about a partially sticking or unclosed intake valve if the backfire continues. I assume your valve settings arent too tight??? John Nordhoff aka Ol John T

Was the engine stuck or just the valve? And was it a intake? If yes I think that the valve has some beads of rust on it and doesn't seat properly, causing the pop in carb. You might try just letting it idle awhile and maybe it would wear off, or you'll have to pull the head.

If the flywheel has been removed, and someone has removed the pin in the crankshaft, they could have put it on a spline either side from the original location. The mag should impulse as the left hand spark mark on the flywheel lines up with a mark on the transmission. This mark should be horizonal with the frame of the tractor. It will be a lip on a side cover of the trans. or a casting mark on the side of the trans. case. If you can not get it to impulse on or just above the mark take the mag off and check the grid for the lag angle on the back of the mag. The marks should be set to the second mark on the left side of the grid. You can adjust the marks by loosening the screws and moving the line to the second mark. By the way if the flywheel has been misinstalled. The tractor will try to hop around, leting you know that either the flywheel or the clutch was installed wrong on the crankshaft, being out of balanced. That is one reason JD put the pins on the crankshaft to keep the balance points and the proper timing marks. Hope this will help you Dan
