Looks like Im back on track with my #5 resto. I took all the great suggestions and picked up a complete set of gaurds (26) @ Tractor supply. They were $4.25 each. I also got 2 sets of under serated blades for 2 cutting blades. They also had complete knife sections but Im choosing to pound my own out like the old timers. Got home and found one problem. The " universal" gaurds didnt fit. They are green with "800" on them. I did red where someone used the blue ones so I went back and got one to try out, no go. I had to bite the bullet and go to the JD house and get original gaurds 10.51 each!!!! and the hardened wear plates arent cheap either. Its now a money pit but hey its a labor of love. Im having a hard time getting the ledger plate pins out. The cutter bar sat in the stowed position for years and when I pushed it down I jambed the ecentric bushing so Im have hech getting the ledger plate off. I did get an operators manual off Ebay and that helped alot. I found that Im missing the right side adjustable brace but I should be able to fab that. Ill start to post pics of my progress.

Never tried the aftermarket guards on mowers. Still had some ledger plates and sickle sections left from a JD 880 SP swather and they worked and were the same for mower.

I used the blue ones on my mower for my LA. I can't remember for sure I may of had to put the bolt through the other way ? Something was a little different but they matched up the best of any of the colors TSC had at that time. You shouldn't go wrong with the Deere parts.I had to get all my hold downs and wear plates from them.
