Unstyled Propane G?

Just purchased a 40 model unstyled G that was converted to propane. The upper water neck was cast from J & S carburetor out of texas, it has a propane manifold, very long .045 aluminum pistons, an oil dipstick, a DLTX 51 carb with a couple of fittings drilled in it for the conversion and the main tank and system also came out of that J & S company. I guess that was converted out of the owner's request, this would not be converted for the factory. I am converting it back to gas with correct hood and fuel tank. Is this propane system worth anything or should I just push it over in the ditch?

I contacted R&W in Littlefield and they told me they only had some load screws for the regulator and no other parts and couldn't get anything for J&S from Impco now. So the only other way to get new parts is by just finding a dealer that has a old stash of them. You might try the dealers listed on Impco site and search around the Dallas area for more parts?

I'm with the other guys. I would restore it with the kit, if it is operable. Everyone knows its not original, but there is something interesting about vintage add-ons such as overdrive units and turbo chargers etc. It sounds very neat to me, as I have never seen an unstyled tractor fitted as an LP gas. Its like G/MAN said that thing would be a BEAST if it's running properly.

If it's a good kit built with quality components that are still serviceable, I'd sure be tempted to "restore" it with that kit. You can by the parts and switch it back to factory at any point in the future, but how many LP-converted unstyled "G"s have you seen? In good condition and properly tuned, that thing should run like a scalded dog, and make 50+ horsepower with ease. And no, it was definintely not done for or by the factory.

I grew up on the farm in California with two styled Gs converted to LP for pulling the grape gondolas through the vineyard during harvest. (We also had a couple of As and a 70 converted to propane along with ALL the farm pickups.) Before daylight, we fired up about 30 tractors, most of them two-cylinder JDs. One of the Gs had a very tall straight pipe on it and every once-in-a-while, a blue flame would escape. It was awesome! Those converted tractors served their owners well and I would love to have that old straight-pipe G in my collection now. I will never condemn a modification if it served a useful purpose.

I would ammend that statement by adding "and if it's done in a decent fashion". Many tractors have been ruined by hack artists attempting to improve the "function" of the tractor. It's the correct police you really have to watch out for in this hobby, though. They seem to labor under the delusion that every tractor was maintained in mint condition, or should have been. They never seem to jump to the logical conclusion that these machines were tools...

I know most people want to restore any tractor back to "original condition", but I think this would be an interesting project to restore with the LP conversion. Probably not many unstyled tractors were converted in the first place,& surely most have been scrapped or changed back to gasoline by now. It could possibly even be "one of a kind"!! Just my 1 1/2 cents worth!

Jon, They say on the IMPCO web site that J&S was bought out by Impco in 1998. Some say no parts are available for the J&S units either but I haven't found out if any service parts exist yet for sure. There was another guy on here with a JD A, TEXASJ, using the J&S system and don't know if he wants used parts for another system or not? Would think the puller guys would want the pistons or manifold at least? I can understand you wanting to convert it back since it's a unstyled G, if you can find the parts to do that with G parts harder to find.

I paid $1.69 for propane and $2.30 for gas right now ? If gas goes way up again it might be worth converting my pick-up ?

There may be someone out there that still runs their tractor on propane and may like those parts.

Propane has less energy than gasoline, so you have to be careful that you are comparing apples to apples.

From the Consumer Energy Center, "Propane is a clean fuel that offers a range closer to gasoline than other alternatives. One gallon of propane contains less energy than a gallon of gasoline (82,485 British thermal units [Btu] for propane, versus 115,400 Btu for gasoline. "

So, 82485/115400 * $2.30 = 1.6439, so running gasoline in your truck is a nickle cheaper per unit LP. There are many advantages to using propane like extended engine life, but economy in 2006 prices isn't one of them.

But in JD tractors the pistons were changed to raise compression 720 all fuel 4.60:1 720 propane 800:1

Well, compression really has nothing to do with it. All maunfacturers used higher compression (even the "G" conversion in this thread) to eak out more power as long as they were under the pre-ignition point of the fuel so that pinging could be avoided, but specific heat output one fuel to the other is all you can compare. Diesel fuel has more energy per pound than gasoline, gasoline has more energy per pound that LP, and coal has more energy per pound than all of them. Horsepower per BTU-corrected pound of fuel is what you need to compare.

Now there you go and spoil all my "crazy" ideas with logic. LOL

My first choice (day dreaming again)for a pick up conversion might be something using the engine from a 720 diesel as they have very good fuel efficiency. Or then there's always some kinda steam boiler fired with all the junk mail I get. LOL I actually heard from a mailman about someone who heats their whole house with junk mail. Said they signed up for everything they could get.
