How do you tell if you have a 540 operating direct off the transmission, or a dual 540/1000 PTO unit?

If you only have one shaft it is the 540 rpm. You will have two connections for the 540/1000 rpm. I think you take the shaft from one and turn it end for end into the other.

My 1010 only has the 540 rpm shaft which is driven from the transmission so I do not have positive PTO (clutch must be disengaged to operate) while the other style offers positive or independant operation of the PTO.

Here are the facts:

As I stated before, a single shaft unit is 540 rpm powered off the transmission and is not a live PTO. Clutch must be disengaged to operate. This style was called Transmission-driven PTO.

Live PTO was available in what was called Dual Independant PTO with either 540 or 1000 rpm. One shaft is furnished but two individual sockets are provided. A pin has to be removed to pull the stub shaft. The 6 tooth spline end (pointed outward) is for 540 rpm operation while the 21 tooth spline end must be outward for 1000 rpm operation.

Your 1010 should have connections for both speeds of PTO. But the higher speed one should have a cap on it. Do you have an owners manual yet? They don't cost much and are worth every penny they cost you. Try TSC, Farm and Fleet or some similar farm supplier to find one. Probably can also buy them online, although I have never looked for one there.
