I recently purchased a 40W (two row) from an aquantance who said all it needed was a starter and battery and it would be ready to work. It has a spun rod bearing, and when I drained the oil out of the transmission it was bone dry. The gear that rides on needle bearings is flopping up and down. tractor is all there and sheet metal is straight but most of the paint is gone. Is this thing worth the effort to put back togother? I alreasy have $1800 in it. Advice welcomed. Thanks GAS

What was your intent?

1. If you wanted a cheap, small tractor to put to use, and didn't want a lot of work, and don't really care what the tractor is, then you made a mistake with this one, and you'll have to take your lumps.

2. If you wanted a Deere, and are interested in putting some work in one, then yes, it was an expensive base, but it could end up being a nice little tractor. Also, they only made 1758 40 W's, so it is a relatively rare little tractor.

Damage is done. Learn from your mistake if indeed it was a mistake. I'm sure you will get more than your money's worth in education and recreation by the time you are finished with the project, and you'll end up with a beautiful 40W to boot. It's a situation anyone could find themselves in, so don't worry about the money, have fun, and let us all know how it goes.

I'd say the cost of repairs exceed any reasonable value. Unless you're collecting a family heirloom you'll never recover your money. The tractor would be worth $3000-3500 at the most.

Since you already have spent $1800 and there is no way you are going to get it back you probably have a expensive base to get started with but I would go ahead and make a good tractor out of it. This will be cheaper than going to buy another tractor and starting on it. One must remember this is a 40W.
