John Deere 4010 question

Just bought a 4010 on a sale and it has a 24 volt starter on it .My question is why were these changed over to 12 Volt and what is the down side of just leaving it as is .I will just be using it to pull a spreader and a round baler.It seems to start and run well.The service mgr. at the dealer was kinda insistant that I bring it in for the conversion to the tune of about $600.00.What do ya think?

I converted our 4010 to 12V. The original 24V system had been messed with when the dreaded previous owner put on a cab with an evaporative cooler. We fought with it for years and never could get it to charge right. Looking back, the high electrical loads probably were a big part of the problem. The 12V conversion I put on seems to turn the engine over faster than the 24V ever did, but this seems at odds with most other people's experience. Maybe there was also a problem with our old starter. I am happy with the conversion, but as one other poster described, lineing up the alternator was not easy. Also I have problems with the fuel guage, namely I need to install a different guage built for 12V negative ground. From what I learned on this site the original guage was intended for 12V positive ground.

I like having the 12V system. All the power I want to the fan in the cooler or the heater in the cab. Power to run the electric over hydraulic solenoids on our bale carrier. It's been trouble free since it was installed over 10 years ago

I and my brother each have 4010D's with 11000 & 13000 hrs. They are both still working well on 24 volt systems. I wouldn't consider changing. I did have to replace the starter on mine at about 10500 hrs.,Rather than rebuild, because I had bought two rebuilt ones for $40 each at an auction (The ring man, who is a neighbor, smiled & said "You want both don't you" & of course I said yes!) & now I still have a spare.

I have to agree, if its not broke don"t fix it. We had a 4020 on the farm that had been converted to 12 volt because the dealer at the time said thats how it shoudl be. After that you could be sure that you were going to have to buy a new starter in three years. Idk if it was the nature of this beast or not but thats the way it was. Our 4010 we left original and it starts better in the cold than the new 8000 series tractors that we have. If your goin to be running monitors and stuff maybe going to 12 isnt bad, but if all your going to do is just run a radio or something then leave it 24. Imo a 24 volt system on those tractors is very good and should not be messed with. Others have different views but thats mine. Good luck

Why fix it, if it ain't broke?

I have a 4020 that's 24-Volt that I'll never convert to 12-Volt. It works well the way it is, and, unless the 12-Volt conversion system is in PERFECT condition, with BIG batteries, it will not crank as well, especially if it gets COLD where you are.

However, for fire safety, check to be sure the circuit breaker kit (a steel plate with 2 breakers attached) has been installed where the chassis wiring interfaces with the big battery cables, at the starter.

P.S....

One GOOD reason for a 12-Volt conversion would be if you are going to have a large 12-Volt accessory load.

If there is a large load that cannot be split between the (-) ground battery and the (+) ground battery, you will have problems with the batteries charging evenly.

when I put in a rebuilt engine in mine I had it converted to 12v. Could not get the pulleys lined up right for the alternator and it was shoddy at best. So after running it a few months like that and not seeing any real inprovement I switched it back to 24 and like the way it looks alot better. Oh and it took out my water pump on 12v.
