Well, I feel like an idiot. Last week I drove the 50 to the dealer to get it dyno'd. It was cold that day to I put a trash bag around the grill screens to get the tractor warmed up. Yeah, you can probably guess where this is going. I didn't take the trash bag off when we hooked it up to the dyno. It tested out at 22 horsepower. I figured the tractor just needed a fresh engine. Today I realized what I did when I was cleaning out the oil in the air filter. So now I am interested what the tractor has without the trash bag. I imagine I probably lost between 4 -6 horsepower with the bag on. Thanks to everyone that answered my posts about the 50. Man, I feel dumb.

Yeah you guys might be right. It might not have made much of a difference having the bag on. It just seems that with the fan blade pulling the air toward the engine and very little air working it's way inside the nose cone, I could've been restricing air for the engine. I don't know. I think I am going to take the tractor back to the dyno this spring when it's a little warmer. Thanks for all the insight. --Tye

IF YOU HAD IT ON A BIG MODERN DAY DYNO IT TAKES A FEW HP TO JUST TURN IT.

I would say that you are being pretty optimistic there Tye! Take the grille off of that 50 one time and take a look at how air tight things are around the radiator and even the hood itself. You are talking about a small cubic inch low rpm engine that doesn't draw much CFM.

Go try the dyno again to prove it to yourself, but my guess is unless the bag was in the air cleaner, you didn't lose the least bit of hp from covering the grille. Sorry, it's just reality!

I'd wager that you get those 5 horse back with a harness on them, presuming that you had one of those plastic bags on. On your first post I didn't think about the fact that the air intake was in front of the radiator. My friend had a fan blade cut a nice louver in the hood of a 54 Ford. According to the mechanic the three remaining blade were trying to decide which spot was to be theirs. The previous owner had run during the winter with the radiator 1/2 covered with cardboard. Now I understand why my brother always preferred to use the remains of a burlap bag. If you go back to the dyno, let us know.

I believe that the problem is that he found the bag as he was cleaning out the air cleaner, like the bag got sucked in .??

I am really going to doubt you see much gain, the bag shouldnt have restricted it that tightly, there is alot of room to get air around the radiator, but if it does make more hp, then no more bags on my tractors anymore.

The bag restricted the hell out of the air flow to the intake pipe.

One way to know for sure if the bag caused a problem is to take the tractor back to the dyno and run it again WITHOUT the bag over the grill screens! Seems to me that the dyno tech would have said something about the bag if he thought there was a problem. At least he should have if he's "worth his salt".

I have to agree with JDhauler. A bag on the grill screens shouldn"t make that much difference. If, as you say, "it restricted the hell out of the air flow to the intake pipe", then it should have been running terribly rough from a very rich mixture. How do you know the bag restricted the air flow? If it was running and sounding pretty normal then I again say I agree with JDhauler.
