I am looking at buying a tractor with a quad range transmission. I am trying to find out how to shift it. I am not looking for the good or bad of the transmission nor what is the best transmission just how to operate it.

A,B,C,D ranges are not synchronized, and are mostly designed to be shifted while the tractor is not rolling. Clutching is required between gears 2 and 3 as well as between 1 and reverse. Like Gman said just pick your letter range (ABCD) and use the shifter closest to you for your rolling shifts. OF course no clutching is required between gears 1 and 2 or between gears three and four. The shifter closest to you must be in neutral beween gears 2 and 3 before the range lever will go into the park position.

I wonder why Deere never put a single-lever QR shifter in the row-crops like they did in the 4wds.

I have often wondered that myself. I saw in the latest green magazine that the articulated tractor featured this month only had one shifter. I have never been in one, and was a little unsure what the shift pattern was like. Seems like if they did'nt have problems with the single shifter they would have done it on all quad ranges just for simplification, but i dunno!

Push the clutch in, select a range and speed, and let the clutch out. Shifts between speeds 1&2, 3&4 and R1&R2 are powershifts - no need to clutch, simply move the lever side to side in the gate. Shifting forward and back from 2 to 3 and vice versa are synchronized. I'd make sure there's an operator's manual included with the tractor.
