Was maybe 6 years ago I went to my local small engine dealer (not JD) and asked them for new camshaft bearings for my HH 100. Blank stare. You know, the steel backed bearings that are pressed into the block and the cover that the camshaft rolls in. Blanks stare. You can't get them unless you go for a short block. Your kidding I say. Nope. Never heard of anybody wearing those out. They usually run 'em out of oil first & throw a rod long before those wear out. I had already cut the old bearings out (small burr in a die grinder) so I was screwed. SOLUTION.... Since my cam was worn some though not nearly as much as the bushings, I ordered a pair of .75" ODx.562"ID caged needled roller bearings & pressed those into my block and cover. Then turned the cam down to 9/16" in a lathe. The cam is a bit soft & is starting to rattle again but it mowed about 2 hours a week for 4 years in Ohio to get there. It now gets little use but it still runs. I really wanted a 3/4ODX5/8ID caged needled roller but couldn't find one. Then I'd have still cut the cam down but I'd have put a bearing bushing on it putting it back up to 5/8 with a real hard surface that would wear a LONG time! At the time, there were none to be found. Might still be that way. If I had a parts engine, I'd have tried new steel backed bushings & a build up job on the cam but I didn't want to weld & maybe warp/ruin my only cam so that's why I went the way I did.
