Can mfwd be installed on a 1998 2wd 5310 with sync-shuttle and a front-end loader? If so, are kits or parts available? My tractor has low hours but our needs have changed.

You're going to be far ahead to trade your tractor in on what you want.

I don't think kits are available but some how you might come up with all the parts. If you have to buy them new, it will probably be cost prohibitive. I'm pretty sure the axles interchange, and know they did on the earlier 52/53/5400. The questionable part would be the front support casting. Though they might look alike, on some 2WD tractors the front support was gray cast iron, while on the MFWD tractors it was nodular cast iron. They look alike and the parts book won't be of any help because I'm pretty sure both are serviced with the nodular iron front support. If you can find a casting number on the front support and compare it to the number on the front support of a MFWD tractor, you'd know. However, by the time you round up all the parts and are saddled with the sunk investment in a 2WD axle, wheels and tires you can't get rid of, I'll bet you'd be better off trading tractors. My guess is that you'd like to upgrade transmission types while you're at it.

How about aadding hydraulic front wheel drive? Is anyone familiar with such a conversion?

When Deere first started with front wheel assist 30 or so years ago, they mistakenly tried hydraulic. It wasn't a good idea. You need to have more power available at the front than a hydraulic drive can practically provide. You'd certainly need a bigger hydraulic pump on the tractor that what's there and the drive off the engine won't stand it. There's good reason why hudraulic front wheel assist kits are not available. I get back to trading tractors.
