I want to say thanks to those who have already gave me information. also I wanted to say I did go ahead and oreder a manual for my tractor from our local dealer. for those who asked for pictures I am sorry i donot have a way to post them. I did take a more detailed study of the wrong parts. my fly wheel is 24" and has a single key way, this doesnot look like any others I have seen. also the radiator has designs in the frame down either side. and the third thing out of place is a front axel fashioned under it made out of pressed steel in a very odd design. also i would like to know some parts to look at the stamp numbers to give me an idea of it year, and which ever of my three things are inncorrect I am looking for the right parts. thank you

Only the first 50 d's had fabricated front axels. After that the solid ones. Flywheel could have changed. As was said, don't sell until someone who knows looks at it and somehow get some pictures posted even if you have to mail them by the post office to someone who will do it for you. I can do it and so can many others.

I agree with Skip that you have one of the earlier Ds and it's worth while checking more out on it. Some used a fabricated weldment type front axle and then they went to a forged looking I-beam shape axle but it was not cast iron yet. Those type of axles would have a date on them like month-day-year. The heavier cast iron axles started showing up sometime around 1928. The flywheel and crankshaft from changed from the keyway type to the splined type sometime between 27 and 28. Does your flywheel have smaller holes and end of the slots? Like about nickle size? Those are called the nickle hole flywheels. Later ones had larger holes at end of slots. If it has the correct flywheel going by the casting number on inside of flywheel will give you some idea of the year range it was made also as unstyled Ds used 4 or 5 different dish type flywheels plus the spoked flywheels. Try to find one of JD magazines out there with a article on the early Ds or a copy of J.R. Hobbs book on the unstyled letters series JD tractors.

Is the ser# tag still on the tractor? It is located below the shifter.

the very first 50 D's had a ladder style radiator kind of looked like four squares cut out of side.they also had a fabricated front axle made up of strap iron and not cast out of iron they also had some other weird features like a smaller bead style JOHN DEERE cast into top radiator as well has numerous other differences.the first tractors had a 26" spoked flywheel then a 24" spoked flywheel and then a small hole then a larger hole in a solid cast flywheel. if indeed you have one of the early tractors it is VERY VALUABLE dont sell until you have had several experts or appraisers look at it. My best advice is to get some pictures and post them somehow on this site as well as johnnypopper.comthen contact some one close and impartial to get an idea of what it is. I am in western South Dakota If it is what I think it could be I repeat could be not is, there is no way I could ever afford it but sure would like to see it.give a call or email and I would help as much as i can.Paul Winter 605-685-6323 [email protected]
