I have a styled B that starts really hard. Runs good when strted. Compression good, carb professionally rebuilt, new points & plugs.
Still cranks a long time before starting.
What am I missing.??

Pete: I read everyones replies and as usual they're all good, but I would also like to throw in my opinion. I had four "B" models and used them mainly for cultivating. Three of them started extremely well and one seemed to have the same problem you're having. I went through the same routine, points, plugs, rotor, cap, etc. and nothing seemed to help. I swapped the mag with one of the other tractors that started easily and what a difference. The tractor started on the second or third turn everytime. I sent the problem mag out and had it professionally redone, put it back on the "B" and thought I had a new tractor. If you have someone nearby you could swap your mag or disturbutor with, it may give you an indication of your problem. Let us new your findings.

I got the same thing with my B. The 530 I have starts great but turns over faster than the B. have often wondered if converting over to 12V would make starting better. The B does flood easily. I usually find that the throttle needs to be all the way back and the choke out to "hit". Once mine starts it will run fine all day.

Pete, you don't say if it is a distributer or a mag. If you have a distributer system make sure the timing is correct, also make sure you have a coil that is compatible to a 6v system, if that is what you have. Also I'm sure you changed the condenser while you were at it. If you have a mag.,also check to see that the impaulse is working right. Let us know what you find. Don

Pete, those wide open questions are a little tough to diagnose over the net but I will throw a few things out. I see those elec start models when right that usually start the first or second piston up. You say new points and plugs so are the wires real good. IM leaning a bit toward an igntion versus fuel prob becauase when cranking the spark is not usually as hot as when running is about all I got to go on here, and you say the carb is rebuilt. I guess you have tired different choke settings, but usually on those I pull her out till she pops (usually 1 or 2 pistons is all) but no more than a couple pistons up for fear of flooding. Weak start up ignition may be cauased by too narrow point gaps or leaky condensors also. Another factor is the ignition start by pass circuit (if the tractor has one??) which consists of an extra wire on the mechanical start switch that is hot only when the start button is depressed. If it has the circuit (by pass and coil and not a mag ignition) what that wire does is feed power direct to the coils high side so that when starting any ballast resistor is effectively temporary by passed. Check the point gap and condensor and see if its coil ignition with ballast and by [pass then maybe we can help more. Ol John T in Indiana
