Due to the parts interchangeability of the "G", a number of things could have happened. Perhaps the original main case was severely damaged, and a main case from an earlier "GM" was substituted, without swapping over the serial number tag. That could have been done 40 years ago when it was still a working tractor, and they didn't care about the serial number. The split-front pedestal is also a bolt-in swap for the original pedestal on the "GM", and some were switched over. However, changing the seat would require a little more work, as I believe the rear-axle housings are different between the "GM"/early-styled "G" and the later ones without the John Deere script on the rear axle. I believe that a "GM" seat mounts through the platform, while the "G" box-style seat mounts to the rear-axle housing itself. I would guess that that is the situation -an earlier main-case swapped into a later tractor, although you'll probably never find out for sure. I would list it for sale as a John Deere "G", and list the inconsistencies, although most buyers won't really care. If somebody wanted to re-tag it as a late-styled "G", all they would have to do is find a scrapped main case with a good tag.
