Dads looking at buying a 1985 john deere 750 4 wheel drive with turf tires, and it has another set of ag tires and wheels, and a 60 inch mid mount mower all for $5900, does this seem good?...It has a few minor things that need fixed such as lights and one rim needs a lil attention where the valve stem comes out(a washer needs welded in)..... the sheet metal is immaculate and the hood and nose has no dents, the only thing it may need is a quick paint job....The tach doesnt work due to a bad cable, but it doesnt smoke at all, and it cranked right up at 40 degrees. We checked the front end and the tranny for oil and they were full(quite rare on machines like this..lol.)...I drove it the day before he did and it shifted very well and drove well, it doesnt have power steering but it steered well.I guess i want to know if anybody else has any experiences with the 750 or if they have one?....and if you can put a 2 stage clutch in in place of the original?...and i"d also like to know about the availabilty and expense of parts..... .thanks yall

I doubt that a two stage clutch giving continuous/live PTO can practically be put into a 750. The 850 and 870 had that feature, and I gotta believe that if it (live/continuous PTO instead of transmission driven PYO) could have been done it would have when the 750 was upgraded to the 770. On the other hand, I see that the 790 has continuous/live PTO on the MFWD version, but not on the 2WD. A long hard study of parts books, available on-line, and your question could be answered. However, I submit that it would be better to look for an 850/870/790 with the continuous/live PTO if you really want that feature. While these have a reputation for being highly reliable, tough little machines, I think you will find what few parts you should ever need to be pretty pricey.

Dad bought the same set up new back in 1983 ? It now has around 2300 hrs but doesn't get much use lately as he went to a Ventrac for mowing.

Don't know alot about parts avail. and price as in all those years other than maintenance items only 1 fan belt, and the spring that centers the gear shifter is all that ever broke ! I'd say buy it you will be very happy with it.And they do make more HP than rated at.
