I am looking at purchasing either an 8630 or an 8640 and would like to know what I would gain by purchasing the 8640

If you buy the 8630 make sure it has a newer series engine in it. If it doesn't, plan on a major expense at the 4000 to 5000 hour mark. That is about the best you can expect out of the original 30 series engine regardless of the care it has received. We have one with a 50 series engine that has 7000 hours on the tractor that is still running strong. Darn good tractor for 70's vintage.

If the 8630 had only a recon and not replaced with a 50 series or recon 50 series would it have a similar expectancy from replacement date?
Does the 8640 have similar problems as Ive heard of quite a few of that model having a 50 series engine?
What did they do to the 50 series motor to improve it?
Was it crankshaft bearing redesign or what?

The 8640 has just a little more hp. than the 8630 and it is a series newer. I think the options are pretty much the same, but with it being a newer machine you will have to pay more for the 8640 for comparable hours. They are both very good machines. About the only thing that you would gain would be resale value when you sold it.

Ive heard that the 8630 has problems with front axle bearings and that the "endplay" must be checked.
I understand that the 8640 has pressure fed diff lubrication on the front.

Is the 8630 much noisier?
