John Deere B shifting

I have a 6 speed B that doesn't always go into the gears on the left side of the quadrant. Seems like the hi-lo part is not working correctly. I assume something is worn or broken. Anyone had this problem? Ken

My 51 is the same way i just bump the clutch handle alittle and it falls right in gear.

I can shift the lever all the way into the slot in any of the left side gears and the pulley will turn but no go. Then again the next time it will work fine. Thanks for the info.

When you say it doesn't always go into the gears on the left side of the quadrant, where is the gearshift when it hangs up on you?

I ask because:

If it is down in the crossover gate well to the rear of the 1st/R and 3rd gates, then you probably have only a gear line up problem. As the other guys say, let the belt pulley roll a leetle bit. If this is what you're experiencing, there likely is no problem however, it is possible that the pilot bearing on the right end of the sliding gear shaft is bad. If that's the case though, you should likely hear a growling when in 1st, 2nd, 4th or R that goes away when in 3rd, 5th or 6th.

If the gearshift won't enter the crossover gate to the rear of the 1st/R & 3rd gates, then the shifters are out of alignment on the rails, detents are tired or badly worn or the detent springs are broken or rusted fast so they don't work properly.

Watch the gearshift closely when you encounter the bind you ask about. It will point to the type of "bind" you're having!

I am in agreeance with BigM. I do the same with my "51 B. Sometimes the teeth don"t line up just right and you have to "help" it.

I have the same problem with my 520. I haven't got into it yet to see what the problem is, but if it doesn't shift to the hi side, I go back through reverse and try again. This seems to help.

Try letting the clutch drum turn a little as you change from left to right or right to left side of the quandrant. Don't hold back on the clutch handle and engage the stopping shoe. Just my experience.
