For a year about we had the battery hooked up negative ground. So we put it back to positive ground and got a new voltage regulator. The generator is working, but the batteries still arent charging. Any ideas??

Thanks

can some body tell him how to polarize his generator. you take a short piece of wire and touch it from the field to armature or vise versa. i don't remember which. that has to be done most of the time when you put on a new generator and you may have the polarity reversed in it because of the way you had it hooked up

Is the regulator for positive or negative ground? Check charging voltage while at full throttle and you should not have over 8 volts in 6V system or over 16V in a 12V set up. High voltage would point to a open or high resistance in your charging system. Do a motoring test on the generator.

Do you have a voltmeter? If so, you can measure at the battery terminals to see if the generator is charging. If the generator is charging then the voltage at the battery terminals will be higher when the engine is running than it is when the engine is not running.

Jon:

How do you know that the generator is working? If you changed the polarity of the generator circuit from negative ground to positive ground, you would have had to swap the ammeter wires, too. So if you did not, and the ammeter is showing charging condition, it is quite possibly really discharging.

What direction does the ammeter show with the lights on, engine off? The direction it shows will be the direction of discharge.

Also, did you change the wire on the coil? The coil terminal that goes to the points should the same polarity as that of your battery ground.
