Well, I thought I would update all of you that helped me previously. My wife and I purchased her late uncle's 1020 for $2000. It had not run well for about 3 years.

I called my local JD dealer. They said that they could send a mechanic to my house for a low fee.

The mechanic arrived yesterday. He went right to work, detecting the bad injector, replacing it, and having it up and running in about 1.5 hours. Final bill = $140!!!!! I take back all those things I thought about my JD dealer!! They did a great job.

Now the problem is with my rings. He said that there is "blow by" of diesel fuel into my oil. What do I now need to do?

Thanks again to all who previously responded. This forum is really helpful.

It probably was the injector. the fuel was not atomizing there for not igniting. run it for a while and see if your oil level stays the same before you spend a bunch of money on it. If your not going to do alot of heavy work with it it will be fine I'm sure

I changed the oil yesterday (and filter). Could the excess diesel in my oil have been caused by the one cylinder which wasn't firing? I was really surprised when I first picked this tractor up. The oil was way over the upper limit on the dip stick (I am assuming that this is due to the diesel in the oil - my wife's uncle would not have filled it past the upper limit).

I'm wondering if this will now be less of a problem since the mechanic fixed the injector and it seems to be running well now. It used to smoke all of the time. Now it only smokes at idle, but it goes away when a load is put on the engine and run at a hgher rpm. One thing that I did notice (prior to changing the oil) is that there is smoke coming out of the dipstick tube when it is running. I think there is less now that I changed the oil. Also, the tube that runs from the valve cover is also blowing smoke.

Any help again appreciated. My JD dealer called yesterday - they want $2400 for an overhaul.

blow by is not fuel in the oil. blow by is the flow of gases from the crankcase. when blow by is excesive it means that gases flow from the cylinders into the crankcase and that means poor ring seling due to worn or broken rings .
98 mm rings on 1020 tend to brake and also ruin the pistons which do'nt have top ring reiforcment like the 102 mm 1020 engines. so, if you have 98 mm 1020 with high volume blow by you're probably in need for an overhoul.

Do you know that it is the rings ?? Fuel can also get into the oil from a bad transfer pump or the umbrella seals in the injector pump leaking, either would be easier to fix than rings
