I hope no one gets mad at me, I own 2 JD's, but, I'm having trouble w/ one of my other tractors...any help is appreciated...I've got a 64' Ford series 4000/ model 4140 Industrial Loader w/ a 4 cyl gas motor. It has been getting hard to start in cold weather (runs great once started). I just gave it a good tune-up (new ignition parts/ cleaned carb-installed rebuild kit)...now, I am getting a GREAT spark (snapping blue)....I know I'm getting fuel to the cylinders because when I take the plugs out, they are soaked in gas...but, she is VERY hard to start....My carb has 2 needles to adjust, I followed the manual & have the main adjusting needle 1 & 1/8 turns out & I have the idle air adjust 1 turn out....I'm @ my wits end...Like I say, once I get her going, she'll work all day w/out hesitation...help.

You said you have a hot blue spark. At the plugs or just the coil? Use some good metallic core plug wires and try another set of spark plugs too. I've had brand new spark plugs, rotors, and caps bad out of the box. Is the carb bowl running over? Floats go bad and leak, make sure gasket went in under needle seat and it's tight and needle seats up.

Might sound crazy but I tuned up a 1946 Dodge truck many, many moons ago and when I was finished the truck was a hard starter.I checked or replaced everything I could think of.I finally squirted some oil around the plugs and found the plugs were leaking just enough compression that it wouldn't start in really cold weather.I double gasketed the plugs and it would then start easily even in zero weather.

throttle??? in reply to Josh Hoffman, 11-25-2005 14:37:18
My tractor has a foot throttle (not hand)...When starting, I have always just pulled the choke, hit the starter & let the choke go, this has always worked fine...should I be giving it some throttle??? I know this is what my manual says, but, I have never done that on this machine before...

My neighbor has a 3000 gas w/ the 3 cylinder to start it in cold weather you pull the throtle to between 1/4 and1/2 start cranking pull the choke then drop the throttle a little.

You might have to give it a little "shoe" to get it started. If your plugs are wet, you might be getting TOO much gas, and not enough air to go with it. Try opening the throttle a touch and see if it starts better.
