I'm working on a 5300 with a blown head gasket. I'll have the head back on soon enough- nothing too out of the ordinary there, but it's also got coolant in the oil. I think I ought to pull the pan and put bearings in it. I've looked at the oil pan, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to get it down without pulling the front axle or not. This is a 5300 with mechanical front. Anybody ever do this? Can I just pull the pan, or will I have to also pull the front axle? Or maybe just the rear pivot bracket?

You've probably already found the answer the hard way. Don't hold me to it 'cause I'm not 100% sure, but as I recall, the engine oil pan can be removed without taking off the front axle. If it's a MFWD, I'd guess that you'd have to drop the front end of the drive shaft.
