I'm getting ready to look at a friends 39B which comes out of gear (mostly 2nd gear) when under a load. I've somewhat familer with john deere's doing all my own work but never been in a transmission. Does anyone know what the most common problem for that and are most parts still available Thanks Jim

Jim,

I am completely restoring my early 40 B SN 81291. This summer I put the transmission back together and found a problem with the 1st and 3rd gear. I was using the JD service manual SM-2004 but I can speak for the IT manual. SM-2004 covers SN-96000 and greater so be aware of what you find.

I think this picture would explain the difference. SM-2004 will tell you the step in the hub of the 1st & 3rd counter shaft gear should be toward the center line of the tractor. For the 4 speed transmission, SN less than 96,000 this step should be toward the bearing / case.

This is the first time I have tried to post a picture. If it doesn"t work I will try again. I will also post a picture of the correct way the gear should be installed.

I forgot to mention, I'm not saying this is your problem but something to look for if it has been apart before. I would look closely at the shifter fork shaft and any worn bearings like others have already posted.

Here is the way I put it together. Remember this picture was taken from the rear and not looking down from the top, like the previous one.

the most commmen cause is loose brgs on lower shaft if run loose to long the gears get worn on a bevel and will not stay in

"B"s are common as dirt, so pretty much everything you could need should be available new, NOS or as good used parts. If it's popping out of gear and the shifter is traveling correctly, it's probably a problem with gear wear. As long as you have the right manual, you should have no problems. Those trannies are pretty darn simple. But you might want to keep notes of what went where to be certain, or better yet take digital pics/video of the disassembly process.
