How much motor oil does a 1939 B hold? Where is the filter and what is the part number for replacement? How much oil does the rear end hold and where is the fill plug?

You'll find this info in the manual too, but I don't want you to screw up and hate us Deere guys because we didn't tell you - be careful tightening the filter cover back down. Don't get it super-tight, or you can distort the internal canister and/or break the filter head, which will require going into the engine to repair.

Yeah we wouldn't want him to get peeved at us. So he can find instructions on how remove and replace a bent oil filter canister in the I&T JD4 shop manual that this site and other vendors sell. It also gives oil & cooling system capacities and specifications for other 2 cyld JDs of that era as well. Try finding support for those red ones like we have for our green ones at this site:

Yeah. I just gave the IH board a quick once-over, and it looks like a fine place to hang if all your red iron is pre-1970. Don't see many questions being asked or answered on anything newer than that.

Josh,
A 1939 B holds 7 - 7 1/2 quarts of oil, assuming you change the filter. Loosen the oil level test cock on the crankcase near the bottom of the flywheel. Remove the breather cover on top of the crankcase cover and pour the oil in until it drips out of the test cock.

The location of the oil filter was given previously, and you most likely will have a replaceable paper filter, p/n AR28110R. If you still have the brass filter unit, wash it in gasoline, drain, and reinstall.

The location of the transmission drain plug was also given, and the approximate capacity is 4 1/2 gallons - fill to the bottom of the fill plug located at the rear of the tractor.

Josh -- you really need to have some documentation on your tractor. OMR2005 and PC330 are the operators manual and parts catalog for B60000 up to B201000. Dealers can get them for you, or you can call (800) 522-7448. You can get them on CD or in hard copy now. Check the price of each -- 'may be different! (PatB)

I am sure someone on this forum knows how many quarts of motor oil a B holds. If this were the IHC forum they would of already told me how to take the tractor apart and put it back together in an hour.

P Browning gave you an excellent piece of advice, and you'd be wise to take it if you intend to do much work on that tractor - get the proper manuals for your tractor. The manuals are relatively inexpensive and will answer questions you haven't even thought of yet. Which takes longer when you're out in the shed working on the tractor - picking up a book laying there on the bench or heading back to the house to log onto the computer, ask a question and wait for a reply? I'd venture to guess that many of those IH boys that can tell you how to take your tractor apart and put it back together in an hour learned how to do so out of a manual.

I tried, I couldn't resist this. "Maybe you should trade it for a red one and then you would have all that info quicker" Sorry, the devil made me do it.

Well, guys tend to have "how to fix it information" ready at hand for a red one.....I mean they have to use it so often.

P.S. I have a red one, too, but I wouldn't say the red board, while friendly, is any faster.

Good one. I have asked questions here and received no answer. Just figured I asked the wrong question. This is a great and voluntary forum and a lot of wisdom/experience you can't put a price on comes from it. A few days ago I asked a questioin about backfiring on a 630. I received about five or six answers on the possible cause. I was thinking only valve problems. Turns out that there are many others. Ended up no buying the 630 because the tractor was just a little too rough around the edges and the owner didn't quite get it on the importance of presenting a straight machine to a potential collector. He was in the camp that thinks because it is running, its a great find. Really appreciate this forum.

Oil filter is under the tractor sort of center under the stack where you add oil. Not sure how many quarts it hold. Filter may or may not be replaceable, the one on my 35 isn't replaceable. Rear end fill plug is on the back plate of the rear end and to the left side as your looking to the front of the tractor. As far as how many gallions I think it holds a little less the 5 gallions.
