Hello, I have a Marvel Schebler TSX-944SL 71F carburator on my '71 JD 1520. It starts and runs good, but it is a thirsty tractor. When the governor opens up, it belches a black cloud from the exhaust. I've searched the internet and ytmag's archives extensively, plus contacted both Denny's and Robert's carb repair shops, yet I still don't have any idea if it's worth the trouble and expense to rebuild my carb. A friend told me that he had Denny's rebuild the carb on his 3020 and ended up with about a 30% reduction in fuel consumption when plowing. I've also read that the electronic fuel solenoids are generally discarded during rebuilds in favor of a manual needle, but I still don't understand why. Do the solenoids tend to allow excessive fuel consumption? Why don't you guys like the solenoids? I get the feeling that most of the posts here regarding carb rebuilds are related to tractors that don't run right or don't run at all. Is there any advantage to rebuilding a carb on a tractor that already runs pretty good? I'm not looking for more power, just reliability and economy. Thanks, John
