3020 Back Fire

Hello,
I am working on a 3020 and was wondering if there is anything I can do to stop the backfiring after shutdown. I know on the new tractors there is a solenoid to shut off the fuel so this doesn"t happen but not sure what I can do on this one. Not a real big deal but if I can fix it sure would be nice.

I would like to find a solution to the problem as my 3020 does this also. Sometimes it runs on & I just leave it in gear (syncro) & dump the clutch to get it to shut off. This tractor is new to me (since august) so would like to fix it this winter.

Only time my 3010 will do that if I don't let it idle for a few minutes after working it.

I have tried that also and it does reduce it but not entirely. Also forgot to mention this is a gas 3020.

Do you have the "low idle" set at Deere spec? And do you put the throttle lever in that position before shutting it off?

Yes the carb is set to spec and always bring it to idle before shut down. The tractor has been sitting for at least five years and only put about 30 hours on it since. The carb has been rebuilt and it runs perfect just the backfire on shut down. Not a real big deal but if I can do something to fix it would like to.

My guess would be corrosion or carbon build-up in the combustion chamber and/or on the intake valve seat. Does it do it if you shut it off right after you start it when things are still cold? If not, I'd do a valve job & clean the head.

The only time it backfires is after you shut it down. Other than that it runs perfect. If it is the valves probably just let it go and see what happens. The tractor did sit for at least 5 years and had minimal use since a engine rebuild.
