Some time ago I thought I read in this forum how someone had installed JD 830 pistons in a JD R model. The author went on to say how the injectors needed to be changed or modifed. Or was it the hole for the nozzle had to be enlarged? I have an R that needs to be bored out and have new pistons installed. Cannot buy new R pistons but can still get 830 pistons. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I have the 720/30 pistons if anyones interested. Nice set of used ones. I was gonna fit them into my 70 gas but went another route.

You can put a 730D or 820/830 pistons in the R. It will take the bore from 5.750 to 6.125. You will need to have the 730 or 830 injector tip installed to match the bowl pattern of the piston. The R tip will not work well, as the spray pattern in different, as well as the R piston is different. It will make a good running R, sounds crisp with a good bark. If you need any other info, drop me a line. I have all that stuff is stock, and all the injection ssytem as well.

Thanks for the reply, I will go ahead with the change over. Thanks for offering info. I will be putting all new parts in from JD. By the way, which head gasket do I use??? R or 820/830? One other thing, has any one installed 820/830 (13mm) pumps in an R?

From what I remember reading the injectors had to be swapped out for ones that come from another brand of engine. Not knowing if the 830 pistons have the same shape chambers or not I wonder if the 830 injectors couldn't just follow the pistons into the R diesel to begin with.

Now I wonder what the drawbar horsepower is gonna be with 830 pistons in a R diesel. This should be worth watching!

Anyone help on the injection side of this as Im curious as well, I also own a model R with 5400 clocked hours and if going through all the trouble is going to be worth it.

a place in green magazine I called them & he said aftermarket r pistons are going to be made very soon & he will have them on hand. if you bore it that far, the block is done- can't be rebuilt again. this way you can get another round out of it. remember the youngins will want to hear one run in another 50 years too. place was somewhere in PA.

I have seen R's setup like mentioned above and making as much or more than 80 hp.
