I want to purchase a 40-45 HP 4WD tractor and am looking at the 3720 and 4120. The 3720 has a Yanmar engine and the 4120 has a PowerTech engine. I love my 950 (with a Yanmar - low fuel consumption, lots of torque) but am not familiar with the PowerTech.

Any thoughts on which is better?

Just to clarify, "PowerTech" is a term Deere is applying to just about all of their engines these days, not any specific model. The vast majority of the "PowerTech" engines are stone-axe reliable, high-quality engines. The 6125, 6081, 6068, etc. Maybe they're having trouble with the little ones, but the bigger ones are all good engines.

I agrre that the 12.5 and the 8.1 are overall a LOT better of an engine but the 6.8 and the 4.5 are having the problems.
the 12.5 and 8.1 are decendants of the 619 and 466 Waterloo engines, and the 6.8 and 4.5 are decndants of the 414 and 276 Dubuque engines.
I just got another load of mostly low houred 6.8 and 4.5 cores in, All of them were replaced under warranty.
The newer engines have created a bigger demand for the older verions. Prices have went up drastically on them even as worn out running engines. They can be easily rebuilt and should run for thousands more hours.

Well, If you could only see the trailer loads of blown Deere powertech engines we have had the last three years, you would run, not walk away from them. They are into the tier three versions and they arent getting much if any better. Not just Deere either, I have talked to people that handle other brands as well and since the EPA regs hit, all the engines are having trouble.
I am not knocking the new tractors, just the design of the EPA engines. Problems include, The high ring pistons breaking out the top, Connecting rods stretching and or breaking, connecting rod bolts breaking, crankshafts cracking and breaking, and on and on...
Yes the Yanmar engines are throw aways but the Deere powertechs are also. On average it would take 10 powertech cores to build back one engine... The Deere / Yanmars have been good little tractors over the years but you usually see them going to salvage yards after someone prices a $5500 short block. Check the tag on the engine in the new Deere tractors, If it says it is the Torreon Mexico version, RUN away. The ones built in Saran France seem to be a better quality overall. I bought a brand new Mexican 3 cylinder powertech engine at a sale recently, It had left the factory without one of the rod bearings in it. Compared some of the other parts on it with a Saran version, and even with the same casting number, some of the parts would not interchange...
Quality in all makes is a joke anymore.....
My 2 cents..

I my opinion and experience the powertech will be a better engine by far. The yanmar engines are throw away engines. Look behind the building at any john deere that works on the small ones and you will find alot of yanmar long blocks. I know I have one of them. They are very expensive to overhaul. best to buy the long block. I have not worked on the 4 cylinders but they are all modular. John deere has a very good reputation for servicing there engines. Why did JD get rid of them? Maybe they weren't that good.

I would agree that the new Power-Tech engine will likely grow into becomming a good engine but I never saw an all-new engine that didn't have birth defects. However, Deere can be depended on take care of these early ones and make them right. It was a business decision not based at all on engine quality, performance nor reliability that drove Deere to develop the new small engine and drop Yanmar's in some tractors.

My experience is that Yanmar engines have been very tough and reliable. Good performers too. Are you sure it's piles of Yanmar blocks you are seeing behind dealerships? Could it be Briggs or Kohlers?

What do you mean by Yanmar engines are "modular"?

Yes they were Yanmars. Last time I looked there were probably 6-to-8 rusting engines back there. Purchased a engine out of a JD 955 for a hundred dollars. Smoking blue from factory. Had 7 hours on it. JD/Yanmars didn't even fix it just warranteed it and threw it away.
