Curious to know if anyone uses the newer antifreezes (like GM"s DEX-COOL) in the old tractors?

Never never NEVER use Dex-Cool in a copper or brass based radiator or anything that uses tin/lead solder. The organic compounds in the Dex-Cool attack the solder alloy and leaches out the tin leaving the lead behind. During the heat/cool cycles the lead begins to break down and allows the joints to pull apart. The end result is a surface that will not take solder during repairs and erosion of the copper or brass surfaces because of the broken down remains of the solder on these surfaces. I speak from experience having destroyed the radiator in my older car through the use of Dex-Cool along with the head gasket and several of the water sensers within the cooling system within half a year.

Our vintage tractors were constructed during a time when lead based solders were very cheap and brass was the first choice material for cooling systems. Times have changed and so have the construction methods and materials. Dex-Cool in itself was poorly tested by General Motors and they did not see the problems down the road, remember the first GM 350 diesels? GM has a habit of making the purchaser the test subject instead of a controlled laboratory. Yesterdays tractors got along very well with the older glycol coolants because they were very well tested through the years and have proven themselves over time. This Dex-Crap was rushed to the market almost overnight and now GM has a few class action lawsuits to contend with thanks to this new compound.

Dont use DEX or any of the later coolants in your older tractors, Ive been down this expensive road before and have the receipts to show.

Dex Cool is extra sensitive to exposure to oxygen and atmospheric carbon dioxide. Unless your rad has a pressure/vacuum cap and an overflow tank. Don't use the stuff.

I would not use Dex-Cool in anything !!! I work at a GM dealer and we have seen way too many bad things with it. It sure is not what it was suppose to be !

Is just when they leak it corrodes worse? I've had two GMs with the heater hose connection leaking and corroding off and always notice a powdery residue by the radiator cap. The idea sounded good but I'm using it anymore either because of problems.

HMMM, seems funny GM would have it in millions of cars and trucks just to give problems, I have it in every tractor I own. I will post back in 100,000 miles to let you all know, LOL

OK LOL, How about the 77 Caprice lemon they sold to the public that had the little metric tranny in them. Mine went in about 20K with the wife driving it. Oh sure they rebuilt it and it fell out completely just after warranty.

I would say that GM fielded more than a couple of those gems also. So if one is an old pfart like me maybe the dexi crap problems will be passed on to the heirs?

Anyhow I have a question? I thought that the silicate free antifreeze would be a good idea for the ole popper. I bought it off the local shelf at Walley's. It is pink. Is that the same stuff or a cousin to the Dexi stuff?

And I suppose your MM tractors all have aluminum and plastic radiators? lol. You will be needing new tractor radiators before long. Just like the millions of bad lemon camshafts they made years ago and most of us got nothing but worthless coupons later but I did get one new engine out of the deal but that didn't make up for the other 3 lemons they cheated me on.

Amen on that orange juice. I have 2001 GM and at 30,000 miles the parking was shot and I don't even use the darn thing, found out that almost GM have this problem If you own one check your parking brake, I finally got GM to make mine good.
