My JD 2950 '83 MFWD sometimes, not always but usually, is very difficult to get from reverse to high range. It doesn't grind, it just doesnt' want to go at all. It shifts easily between 1 to 4 and almost always shifts easily from high range to reverse, but doesn't like to shift from reverse to high. Sometimes it shifts as if nothing is between the ranges but air. I asked my local mechanic friend and he said that the clutch design on that tractor just acts like that. I was ready to spend some money because it is a bear to do some loader work moving hay all day wrestling that clutch and shifter. The clutch has the stiffest peddal of any tractor I've ever driven.

Does anybody know if that clutch design is actually that hard to work or is it possibly not right and can be fixed?

I worked for Deere about the time that tractor was new. I can't remember for sure all the models included, but they had troubles with the clutch shaft that goes through the tractor sticking. I think the replacements had a grease fitting in the end of them so you can keep it lubed up.Does yours have a fitting in it ? Take the linkage loose at that shaft and see if it moves free,if it does than I'd say something isn't right with the clutch,if it's stiff then I'd try to free it up first.
