Pony motor starts and runs, but sure smokes a lot. What would be the cause of all the smoke and what is the cost if it needs an overhaul? Thanks, JIm

Don't forget to check that little air intake on top of the pony. With a lot of luck, it is stopped up and causing at least part of the excessive smoking. It is oil bath and gets clogged with dust and dirt over the years, easy thing to miss. Look closely at the small intake area.

Jim..once in awhile the smoking will be due to gas diluted crankcase oil, plugged returned lines or some other simple fix, but 99% of the time the rings are just worn out. High rpm operation with gas washed cylinder walls probably being the cause. Solution is to pull the pony engine to check the valve guides, replace the rings, hone the cylinders, check the oil return lines, replace water pump seals, rear crankshaft seal and install new head gaskets. This will make the pony engine be less troublesome in the future.

Smoke seems to be natural for those engines, but not excessive smoke. The most simple fix if you're lucky is that the tiny drain holes in the head become clogged and the oil pools in the valve area causing it to be sucked past the intake valves and causing smoke. It is usually not that simple.

Overhaul is a relative term and means many different things to different people. A ring job could be less than $60 and a complete overhaul with pistons, liners, valves and bearings (bushings) could run over $2,500 in parts alone!
