I have had the carb completely rebuilt on my 4020. It run perfect for 5 to 10 hours then I have to start running with the choke farther and farther out until it quits completely. If I keep tapping on the carb it seems to help. This is a Marvel Shebler carb. I was told that I should throw this away and get a Zenith. Any suggestions?

I would second (or third) the comments on the upgrade. I had a Marvel Schebler on an Oliver 1850 (same carb) and went to a Zenith and had the same results as others, better starting, running, and fuel economy. I paid $450 for mine, as well.

I too was a doubter about those Zenith carbs.until I found a good deal on one, rebuilt it and put it on the 4020. I will tell you it really does a better job.

Check to make sure you have a steady stream of fuel at your carb and don't have some plugging in lines, filter, and tank. Make sure the float isn't hanging or rubbing inside bowl or has a hole in it getting heavy with fuel in it. You can test a float by holding it with pliers in a pan of warm water and you will see air bubbles spewing out where there is a hole. You can solder the hole shut yourself if handy with a solder gun. Find float repair instructions at thecarburetorshop.com site. The accelerating pump bore wears out in those carbs and other problems too and yes many are happy by replacing them with the Zenith.

One of the best things I have done to my 4010 was to spend 450 dollars on a new Zenith .... seemingly more power, runs better, starts better, and goes almost 2 x longer on same fuel...I don't work it hard and it was running pretty rough before I did that. Good luck, Mike.
