I bought a 1968 JD 4400 with the 292 GM gas engine in the middle of Indianapolis today for $600. If there are some experts here I will post questions. I have already posted on the JD site at harvesting.com. Thanks in advance.

Yep I am bi-tractoral again. :)

I checked out the combine engine this morning. Radiator was full of coolant and it looked good. No oil showing on the dipstick and the engine appears stuck. I did stick a small wrench on one of the pulley bolts but I couldn't turn the crankshaft.

I guess I will drain what oil is in there and stick in 8 quarts of fresh oil and probably pull the spark plugs and dump in Marvel Mystery oil and button it up for the winter.

Doesn't sound good, Red. Looked like you found a cream puff, from the pics. I've never worked on the old 00 series but have spent some time on the new 00's (95-9600's) I remember you saying that the clutch might be stuck. (I'm sure you already checked this, but.) I don't know how the drive is set-up on those old machines, but you could have a stuck clutch. Maybe the seperator dirve something. We've had to take the seperator drive lines off the newer machines when they burn the clutches out, just to get them up and running to get to the shop. (Usually because they had about a ton of green plugged in the cylinder.) Well sorry to here the bad news on the old girl, I'm sure you'll have her up and running in time to get the beans in. Talk to you later.

Hey hay, just punch below. It might take a spell for the site to come up. Geocities has been very unstable since they merged with yahoo. It has been down a bunch recently. Must be a Belarus server. :)

Hey Red, I found your pics of your new toy. Wow nice little find. With a little work and some paint she'll be ready for work. Good luck.

Hey Red, I just finished reading you story about the 99 bean harvest, sure was good. I wish I had the time to spend helping those harvest guys. I think you made good decision to pass on the Silver Trash Can in the barn, the new 4400 has great possibilities, you going to be running you 4400 next to that 6620 next year. Ya'll would be big timeig it with two machines in the field. (We still have to get someone to harvest our wheat.) Well like I said she looks good. Later.

Thank you and thank you on both threads. I am planning on running beans on what use to be my grandpa's farm that Jeff now owns. He also is renting a 15 acre very hilly piece of ground that would be more fitted for the 4400 then the 6620.

The article was too long. If we had not been interrupted by rain, we would have had that harvest done in 10 days like it happened in 1997.

Next article will be on this combine but I will try not to put everyone to sleep.

Red, I used to own a 4400 and ran the heck out of it. If you have any questions about yours, feel free to e-mail me. Also, they started making 4400's in 1970, so yours is at least that new. If you have the serial number I can let you know for sure what year it actually is. Hope this helps. Mike

Mike I will be giving you a hollar as I start getting into it. My farm neighbor Ernie logged 6,500 hours on a 4400 so I have 2 excellent sources now. He did mention I might have a stuck clutch plate on the pressure plate. Guess I will find out. My buddy Slo Mo is driving through Indy tomorrow so I will have some help.
