Can any tell me why John Deere went form a 4 ring piston to a 3 ring piston. I just took by 5010 apart and I have R38601 four ring pistons in it. I ordered from JD the replacement pistons and I got 3 ring piston with the top ring 1/2 an inch lower than the old piston top ring.won"t that lower the compression and give it poor starting?
thanks Jonathan

What are you doing with the old pistons? What shape are they in? I'd was kinda looking for a good set laying around. Are overbore pistons available?

Engineers always concerned about the parasitic load of an engine, friction being a biggie.3 rings--less friction, less heat. Its the power the engine uses to produce more power i.e.--the power it takes to operate the oil pump, water pump, camshaft, valves, etc.I didn't say it was better.Personally I like the early ones with the oil control ring at the botton of the piston skirt.

The three wring piston was a update when deere went to the 5020. Dont know why though. Deere got the Hp increase on the 5020 from head and injection system up grades and not by compression.

Is the wrist pin hole in the same spot from the top ? Does the top chamber look the same ?

THE WRIST PIN HOLE IS THE SAME FROM THE TOP AND THE CHAMBER IS THE SAME SIZE. I DID THE LIQUID MEASURE ON BOTH.

Probably was a update change made or they got you the wrong ones? Ask the dealer or shop foreman or mechanics about the change if they know? I took a quick look in 6030 parts book I had handy and it shows 3 ring pistons for turbo and nat. apsirated engines but does show different piston set part numbers for them. You may want to go to Link and compare 5010, 5020, & 6030 just to see?
