I BOUGHT A 51A REALLY CHEAP, IT WAS RUNNING WHEN IT WAS PARKED TWO YEARS AGO.
IT HAS A NEW COIL,PLUGS,POINTS,BATTERY AND THE CARB. HAS BEEN CLEANED.
IT SPINS OVER GOOD AND FAST BUT WILL NOT CRANK.
A LITTLE WHITE SMOKE WAS COMING OUT OF THE PIPE AND IT POPPED ONE TIME AND BLEW FIRE OUT THE PIPE.
I HAVE BUILT AND WORKED ON CARS ALL MY LIFE AND BUILT SEVERAL SHOW CARS. BUT THIS IS MY FIRST REBUILD OF A TRACTOR. (THE 8N JUST NEEDED PAINT)

If it still won't run after trying what the other fellows have posted check your spark plug wires. The top wire in the dist. cap should go to the left (flywheel) side and the bottom wire should go to the plug on the right (clutch) side. Also make sure the plug wires have real wire centers and not the graphite or silicon type.

Since you have worked on cars you should have a timing light, check the timing too. Use the left cylinder and check the timing. Also check the compression like Pappy said, make sure it doesn't have a stuck valve or something. If you have petcocks open them and watch them as you turn it over, if it is getting a good mist of fuel then you have an ignition problem. If no mist, try putting a little fuel in a cylinder, and if she pops like she wants to run, you still have a carb problem. (I seem to be having lots of carb problem lately.) Have some one hold the start down and pull the wires off the plugs and hold the away form the plug and see how the spark is. Well just some ideas to start, its just like a car but better, less thing to work on, but they can drive you nuts at times. Good luck.

Check your valves and compression. Remove the spark plugs, hold your thumb over the hole. Have someone run the starter. It will blow your thumb out of the hole. You have compression. Do both sides. If no compression, or uneven compression, remove the valve cover and see if the tappets are adjusted to .020 and that the valves are moving freely. You can move the valves with your hand as the springs are not that tough. I had one with the same problem, but I found that someone had placed a red grease rag in the manifold while they worked on the carburetor, turned the engine over and sucked the rag down into the intake and into both intake valves. I had to pull the head to get it out.
