I have the brake linings and rivets for my 530 and 60 and I should do both. I've riveted new linings on before, using my father's hand rivet tools. However, he's now 83 and doesn't know where they are! Despite all my searching, I can't find them. Where can I buy what I need? Is there a special size? Thanks for any help.

John, If you go to a flea market, you may just get lucky. I bought a couple of the rivet tools for $3 each about a year ago, and as recently as last weekend, saw some more for sale. This is a longshot, but for what it is worth, if you are near Medina, Ohio, e-mail me at [email protected], and you can come over and use my tools to do your linings Greg

Thanks but I'm in northcentral PA. I won't do the brakes until winter so I'll keep watching and then maybe buy one of the aircraft supply ones if I don't find a used set.

I've tried punches but if you're not careful you will crack the lining. Take to dealer. Also I've wondered why pop rivets wouldn't work...guess they might lock up if pin came out.

If you got a set of punches and a wide center punch, that is all you need.

Use the center punch to get the rivet to bell out. Then take a regular punch and flatten.

Usually you need a punch on the back side so you have something to hammer against.

Old trick my shop teacher in high school taught me many years ago.

All the other posters have good input. However if you still want to buy your own machine, McMaster-Carr has them, page 2704 in their catalog 104 (the latest one I have but I think they have later catalogs out) and they have a www.mcmaster.com web site. The price for that rivet machine is $47.98 and its catalog number is 6664A4. I bought this riveter in 1996 and it was $41.36 then. It worked well on the brake linings of my model 50.

Most all JD dealers still have a brake pad riveter, as just about every tractor newer/bigger than yours require the same tool. Your dealer should be able to do those in about 20 minutes. The labor would be much cheaper than it would be for you to purchase a tool.

John51, Get a set of transfer punches, 1/4 size works well. You can buy the punches for $10-15. I have done several this way.

The one I have fits in the vise or press. The one shown in catalog has a screw type arbor. You might find a single tube rivet tool at a old hardware store or leather supply place or brake riveter at auto supply or let a local shop press them for you.

Glen,

I bought a rivet tool from an aircraft tool company. A couple months later I got a catalog for aircraft tools in the mail. When my wife came in from the mailbox with that catalog, she wanted to know what the _ell I was up to now.... She figured I"d taken up yet another hobby.

The tool works great.

This link takes you to the brake riveter like I have not the other one. This one is less $ too. This one clamps easily in a vise.

Paul, You can always find lots of goodies to add to a wish list in those aircraft catalogs. lol. Was that a Aircraft Spruce catalog you got? www.aircraftspruce.com We use to get the fuel tank liner from those places till less expensive stuff starting showing up. Got some buddies that mess with those little experimental planes but I'm not getting in one yet. lol.

Unless you REALLY want to do it yourself, most machine-shops have a rivet press, and can put those linings on in a fraction the time it takes to do it by hand. I doubt they'd charge you much at all to do it.
