Hello fellow JD owners/enthusiasts,

I have aquired a couple of John Deere implements in various purchases I would like information to.

The first is what I believe to be a no.44 2 bottom plow. Were they all configured for use with a hydraulic lift cylinder or do I have the wrong plow? Rear wheel is steel, and it has "No 16 Frame" written on the side. They guy I got it from said he could never get it to plow right, and so he parked it in a hedge row where it sat for the last 20 years. Upon inspection its no wonder. The side(sod) cutters are missing, and points and slides(shares) are badly worn (not sure of terminology). Is a plow which is almost complete like this, but in need of some TLC worth holding onto? Or is it more worth parting out/selling?

The other is what I believe to be a no.5 sickle bar mower. Also sitting outside for a while. I think its complete, but also in need of some TLC. Anybody know what it is worth?

I have pictures if needed. Thanks for your help!

GO JD

i'd like to see you fix at least the plow up. there is not many of them left and they make a neat display at tractor shows. if you don't know where to seel them out take out an add in green magazine or two cylinder magazine. you have to be a member first by buy a year subscription first but the mags are great any way. to many people junk them out and one day there want be any left at all. the mower isn't all that rare. when handling it be sure to not wrap your hands around the cutter bar. it can slip at any time its moved and cut off some stuff. always open you hand up and keep it flat against the underside of the bar when around the mower

Jolly,
I have many used parts for the #5 mower but with the distance involved, the shipping would probably be more than the price of the parts. Let me know if you need anything. David

Jolly, No, not all model 44 plows were hydraulic lift. If they are hydraulic lift equipped they will have an H after the number. The "side cutters" are called coulters. I own both a 44H plow and a no. 5 mower. Paid $50 for the plow and $75 for the mower, both from private parties. Have seen them sell for about $50 each at auctions. As Glen TX said, many parts are still available from JD which is pretty amazing, but be prepared to dig for the dollars as some of the parts are expensive. But having the parts available and expensive is still better than to not have parts available at any price.

Sure they are worth fixing up if not too far gone and depending on how much time and $$ you want to spend on them. Some parts will even be available from JD yet too. Both models were popular implements for their time. You can call 800-522-7448 for manuals or check with your dealer or look at their publications site. See what parts you need to fix them and then you can decide.
