I thought This may be a better place for advice, purely deere people. The clutch on the stled G I pull with has become troublsome. When I pull the clutch is doing its job until i reach the end and begin to work the engine as I am diggin' in at near the end of a pull. At this point the clutch begins to slip with engine speed leveling off and the tires loosing rpm. When the tractor is idling with the clutch disengaged, belt pulley stopped, it rattles and clinks like its a can full of nails. When the tractor is idling with the clutch engaged, the sound is not much better, still noisey clinking and rattling. The clutch discs are good and the clutch drive and sliding drive disc is new. The clutch is adjusted and snaps in good. As a matter of fact the clutch can not be adjusted any more without inhibiting the engagement. Not only it the thing noisey, it is slipping!! Any advise is appreciated.

The dogs and toggles are available new from Deere, but they're a little pricey. You'll need three of each, and you're going to end up with about $200 total to get them. But considering that you're getting brand-new OEM parts for a 50+ year-old-tractor, that doesn't seem so bad. You might also be able to find good used units, but good used parts for "G" clutches are getting pretty scarce, particularly the clutch drivers. I'd recommend disassembling the clutch and inspecting all of the components. The rattling noise could be due to the driver disk that floats on the splines being worn, and may not be related to the slipping problem. There are "undersize" units available to help take up the slop. Or the "clutch driver" itself might be loose, as it fits on tapered splines further in the clutch assembly. Get ahold of an I&T manual and "G" parts book and get your clutch apart and inspected. You'll want that sliding disk to fit pretty snugly on the crankshaft splines, while still being able to slide correctly during engagement and disengagement. And if you go hunting for used parts for the operating assembly, make sure you get the right parts for a styled "G", as the unstyled "G"s used a different setup. You might have to spend some green, but there's nothing terribly difficult about the clutches, and you should be able to get it back in shape okay.
